Rehabilitation Therapy: the Idaho Path
Rehabilitation therapists help people walk, dress, speak, hear and play again after an injury, a stroke or a birth defect. The therapist degrees are graduate degrees, offered by Idaho State University and by three schools in Spokane. The assistant degrees take two years, and North Idaho College offers the physical therapist assistant. Physical therapy, occupational therapy and audiology clear the two-child bar; the assistant jobs do not.
Why this field is on the list · as of September 2026
The therapists pass the two-child test. At Idaho medians, the physical therapist ($99,000), occupational therapist ($97,760) and audiologist ($95,120) all clear the two-child bar ($88,747). The PT and OT come close to Boundary County’s three-child bar ($98,181). The speech-language pathologist ($84,380) clears only the one-child bar ($82,297).
The assistants and trainers fall short. The OT assistant ($65,330), PT assistant ($61,020), athletic trainer ($60,410) and recreational therapist ($49,720) will not carry a family on one income. They are good second incomes and good first steps, reached in two years instead of six or seven.
The work stays in human hands. Rehabilitation is hands-on by nature. A therapist steadies an elderly man on his first steps after a hip replacement, stretches a stiff shoulder, or coaxes words from a child who stutters. AI may help with notes and exercise plans. The encouraging, watching and correcting are done in the room.
Watch for: an aging panhandle means more strokes, joint replacements and hearing loss. Home-health and skilled-nursing jobs for therapists are growing with it.
01 · The ladderSix therapies, two levels
Each therapy has an assistant or entry job and a therapist degree. Working as an aide or assistant first is the best way to choose among them.
-
Rehab aide, at 16 to 18
Clinics and nursing homes hire aides to set up equipment, clean tables and help patients move. The job is unlicensed and pays little, but PT and OT programs value the hours, and a CNA course (see nursing) makes a student more useful.
-
Physical therapist assistant or OT assistant
North Idaho College offers a two-year Physical Therapist Assistant associate degree, accredited by CAPTE, with competitive admission. It is part of an Idaho consortium with the College of Southern Idaho, the College of Western Idaho and Lewis-Clark State College. Assistants carry out treatment plans set by the therapist.

Bachelor’s degree and prerequisites
Anatomy and physiology, biology, chemistry, physics (for PT), psychology and statistics, plus observation hours. NIC transfer courses and dual credit cover much of the first two years.

The therapist degree
Physical therapy (doctorate, about three years): Idaho State University (Pocatello and Meridian), Eastern Washington University (Spokane), and Whitworth University (Spokane, 32 months).
Occupational therapy (master’s or doctorate): ISU’s Master of Occupational Therapy (Pocatello and Meridian), and EWU in Spokane, whose 2.5-year master’s is moving to an entry-level doctorate pending accreditation.
Speech-language pathology (master’s, two years): ISU (Pocatello and Meridian), Idaho’s only accredited program, and WSU Spokane.
Audiology (doctorate): ISU in Pocatello.

02 · BranchesWhere the work leads
Hospitals, clinics and home health
Kootenai Health, Bonner General and Boundary Community Hospital all run therapy departments, and outpatient clinics are in every panhandle town. Home-health agencies send therapists to patients’ houses.
Schedule: Mostly weekday hours. Home health lets a therapist set much of the day’s route.
Schools and children
School districts hire speech-language pathologists, OTs and PTs for students with disabilities. Pediatric clinics treat young children before school age.
Speech therapy also works well by video. School districts are the largest employers of remote SLPs, and school teletherapy pays about $44 an hour on average. An SLP must hold a license in each state where her students live, so one who serves schools in several states keeps several licenses current.
Schedule: The school calendar, with summers off.
Athletic training and recreation therapy
The University of Idaho offers a Master of Science in Athletic Training and a post-professional Doctor of Athletic Training. Athletic trainers work with high school and college teams, clinics and industry. Recreational therapists use activity and recreation in rehab and long-term care.
Pay: athletic trainer $60,410; recreational therapist $49,720. Short of the bar.
03 · For the familyThe schedule, for a father and for a mother
- For the one who carries the income. A PT or OT at the Idaho median carries a two-child family on one income, with weekday hours and no night call. Plan for six or seven years of school after high school and the loans that come with a doctorate. An assistant degree alone will not carry a family, but it can pay the bills while he finishes the therapist degree.
- For a mother at home. Part-time and per-diem therapy work is easy to find, especially in home health and nursing homes. A school-based SLP or OT works the school calendar. An assistant license reached in two years is a steady second income on a few days a week.
- Keep the license current. Idaho licenses PTs, PTAs, OTs, OTAs, SLPs, audiologists and athletic trainers through the Division of Occupational and Professional Licenses. Keep up continuing education while working part-time, because a lapsed license is harder to restore than to keep.
04 · The home-school yearsWhat to add to the core path
Grades 9–10
- Everything in the shared core, with extra weight on anatomy
- Sports, dance or a physical trade to learn how bodies move and heal
- Volunteer in a nursing home or a camp for children with disabilities
Grades 11–12
- NIC dual credit in anatomy & physiology, psychology, statistics and English, paid largely through Advanced Opportunities
- Observation hours with a PT, an OT and an SLP, to choose among them
- A CNA course or a rehab-aide job
After high school
- The NIC PTA degree, or transfer courses toward a bachelor’s
- Apply to therapist programs at ISU or in Spokane
Tie to the Verification Track
A therapist measures before and after. Did the knee bend farther this week, or does it only seem so? Is the patient using the new exercise at home, or just saying so? The Verification Track trains that habit of testing progress against real measurements.
