Pharmacy & the Lab: the Idaho Path
Pharmacy and the medical laboratory both start with a paying job at 16 or 18. Idaho registers pharmacy technicians at 16 with a parent’s consent, and a phlebotomy course is short. At the top of the pharmacy ladder, the pharmacist clears every income bar. The rest of both ladders falls short of a family income, and parts of this work are among the most exposed to automation on the list.
Why this field is on the list · as of September 2026
The pharmacist passes; everyone else falls short. Idaho pharmacists earn a median of $144,900, and $157,100 in Coeur d’Alene. Even the 25th percentile ($131,830) clears the three-child bar. The pharmacy technician ($46,420), clinical lab technologists and technicians ($47,450) and phlebotomist ($43,400) are well short of the one-child bar ($82,297).
Treat the short rungs as jobs, not careers. A pharmacy tech or phlebotomy job at 16 to 18 pays for college, and a pharmacy tech who becomes a pharmacist has an edge. Lab work is a good second income and a good fit for a careful, quiet worker.
AI and automation exposure is mixed. Counting pills, filling vials and running routine blood tests are already largely done by machines. The pharmacist who catches a dangerous drug interaction, counsels a worried patient, or works a hospital’s medication plan with the doctors is harder to replace. Drawing blood from a frightened child or an elderly patient with hard-to-find veins stays in human hands.
Watch for: retail pharmacy has been closing stores nationwide, while hospital and clinic pharmacy has held up better. Ask where the jobs are before starting a PharmD.
01 · The ladderTwo ladders that start young
The pharmacy ladder and the lab ladder are separate, but both start with a paid job while still in high school.
-
Pharmacy technician, at 16
The Idaho Board of Pharmacy registers pharmacy technicians from age 16, with a parent’s or guardian’s consent form for applicants under 18. Registration goes through the Division of Occupational and Professional Licenses. National certification (PTCB) is optional in Idaho but helps with hiring and pay.
Idaho median $46,420 · 25th percentile $39,670 · a job, not a family income
-
Phlebotomist
Phlebotomists draw blood for testing. Idaho does not license them, and training is a short course followed by a national certification exam. Ask NIC’s Workforce Training Center and local hospitals about courses. The skill is also useful to nurses, medical assistants and paramedics.

Medical laboratory technician
North Idaho College offers a Medical Laboratory Technology associate degree through a consortium with the College of Southern Idaho and the College of Eastern Idaho. The program is moving from a spring start to a fall start: there is no spring 2027 class, and the next class begins in fall 2027, with applications from mid-April to the end of June. It is accredited by NAACLS. Classes are online, with student labs and clinical internships in hematology, microbiology, chemistry, blood banking and urinalysis.

Pharmacist
Idaho State University’s College of Pharmacy offers a four-year Doctor of Pharmacy in Pocatello or Meridian, and in Anchorage, Alaska. With the pre-pharmacy courses first, the road usually takes six to seven years after high school. Hospital pharmacists often add a one- or two-year residency.

02 · BranchesWhere the work leads
Hospital and clinic pharmacy
Kootenai Health, Bonner General and Boundary Community Hospital all run pharmacies. Hospital pharmacists work with doctors on dosing and drug choices. Small rural hospitals may use remote pharmacist review at night. Some hospital systems and mail-order pharmacies hire pharmacists to review orders remotely. Whether that work can be done from home depends on the employer and the pharmacy rules in force, so ask before counting on it.
Schedule: Hospitals staff pharmacy around the clock; clinics keep daytime hours.
Community pharmacy
Chain and independent drugstores in every panhandle town. An independent pharmacy is a small business, and some pharmacists buy one.
Schedule: Retail hours, including evenings and weekends.
The hospital lab
Lab technicians run the blood counts, cultures and blood bank that every diagnosis depends on. A four-year medical laboratory science degree leads to the technologist level, supervision and specialty work.
Schedule: Hospital labs run day, evening and night shifts; clinic labs keep daytime hours.
03 · For the familyThe schedule, for a father and for a mother
- For the one who carries the income. Only the pharmacist carries a family here, and comfortably. Weigh the six or seven years and the loans against the retail-store closures. A pharmacy tech or lab job pays through college but will not carry a family on its own.
- For a mother at home. Part-time pharmacist shifts pay well by the hour, and many pharmacists work two or three days a week. Pharmacy tech, phlebotomy and lab work are easy to find part-time and on weekends, as a second income.
- Keep the license current. Idaho pharmacists and technicians renew with the Board of Pharmacy and keep up continuing education. Keep national certifications active while working part-time.
04 · The home-school yearsWhat to add to the core path
Grades 9–10
- Everything in the shared core, with full-year chemistry and biology with labs
- Careful math: ratios, unit conversions and dosage problems
Grades 11–12
- Register as a pharmacy technician at 16 with a parent’s consent, and work part-time
- NIC dual credit in chemistry, biology, math and English, paid largely through Advanced Opportunities
- A phlebotomy course once old enough
After high school
- The NIC MLT degree, or pre-pharmacy courses at NIC
- Apply to ISU’s PharmD while working as a technician
Tie to the Verification Track
A pharmacist checks the prescription against the patient: the dose, the other drugs, the kidneys, the allergy list. A lab technician reruns a result that makes no sense before it reaches the doctor. The computer flags errors, and people check the flags. The Verification Track trains that habit.
