EMT & Paramedic: the Walla Walla Path
Emergency medicine starts younger than almost any other healthcare field. A single EMT course leads to a volunteer squad or an ambulance job at 18. Paramedic school follows, and a fire-department career is where this work becomes a family income.
Why this field is on the list · as of September 2026
The EMT card is a door, not a destination. EMTs earn a median of $52,690 here, short of the one-child bar ($81,697).
Paramedic and firefighter pay are where the income is. The paramedic clears the three-child bar, and the firefighter clears the two-child bar. Full-time fire departments with paramedic engines pay the most.
AI exposure is low. Nobody is sending a robot to a rollover on US 12. Software helps with dispatch and charting; the hands-on work stays human.
Watch for: Washington lets students enroll in an EMT course at 17 (16 under a 2025 law, once the Department of Health finishes the rule) and certifies EMTs at 18, with no exceptions.
01 · The ladderFrom EMT to paramedic and fire
-
EMT
Washington lets students enroll in an EMT course at 17 (16 under a 2025 law, once the Department of Health finishes the rule) and certifies EMTs at 18, with no exceptions.
Where: Walla Walla Community College (EMT); Columbia Basin College in Pasco (paramedic).
Washington median $52,690 · 25th percentile $47,560 · stepping stone
-
A year on a squad
Most paramedic programs want experience first. Volunteer squads, rural ambulance services and private ambulance companies all count.
-
Paramedic
About a year of classes, clinical hours and field internship, then the national exam.
Washington median $104,310 · 25th percentile $80,320 · clears the three-child bar
-
Firefighter
Fire departments hire through testing and an academy. An EMT card is required almost everywhere, and a paramedic card moves a candidate up the list. Local departments include the Walla Walla Fire Department and the county fire districts.
Washington median $94,520 · 25th percentile $72,300 · clears the two-child bar
02 · BranchesWhere the work leads
Fire departments
Career departments run engines and ambulances with firefighter-EMTs and firefighter-paramedics.
Schedule: Long shifts (often 24 hours) with whole days at home between them.
Ambulance services
Private and hospital ambulance services run emergency calls and transfers between hospitals.
Schedule: 12- or 24-hour shifts.
Hospitals and flight
Emergency departments hire EMTs and paramedics as technicians. Experienced paramedics can move to flight teams.
Schedule: Shift work.
Volunteer squads
Rural squads depend on volunteers, and the calls count as experience toward paramedic school.
Schedule: On-call from home.
03 · For the familyThe schedule, for a father and for a mother
- For the one who carries the income. Only a full-time fire department or a senior paramedic job carries a family here. Plan the EMT years as training, not the goal.
- For a mother at home. Volunteer and per-diem EMT work can fit around a family, but the pay is low; it is service more than income.
- Keep the license current. EMTs and paramedics renew with continuing education and skills checks. Keep the national registry and the Washington license current.
04 · The home-school yearsWhat to add to the core path
Grades 9–10
- Everything in the shared core, with a strong first-aid and CPR habit
- Physical fitness: lifting, carrying and stairs
Grades 11–12
- An EMT course as soon as the age rules allow
- Anatomy & physiology through Running Start
- Ride-alongs or a squad cadet program where offered
After high school
- EMT work and a year on a squad
- Paramedic school, then a fire-department test
Tie to the Verification Track
A paramedic checks the monitor against the patient in front of them. A reading that does not fit the patient gets rechecked, not trusted. The Verification Track trains that habit.
