Dentistry: the Tri-Cities Path

Dentistry has the most family-friendly schedules on this list: set office hours and no nights. The ladder runs from dental assistant to hygienist to dentist.

Why this field is on the list · as of September 2026

$203,250Median dentist pay, Tri-Cities
$122,480Median dental hygienist pay, Tri-Cities
$105,298Benton County living wage, one earner, three children

The dentist clears the three-child bar; the hygienist clears the three-child bar. Dental assistants ($49,540) are short of a family income, but the job is a good first rung.

The hours are the draw. Offices keep weekday hours, and part-time hygiene work is normal.

AI exposure is low. AI helps read X-rays. Cleaning, filling and pulling teeth stays in human hands.

Watch for: hygiene programs are small and competitive. Apply early and finish the science prerequisites first.

01 · The ladderFrom assistant to dentist

  1. Dental assistant

On-the-job training or a short certificate. Many hygienists started here.

Where: local dental offices (on-the-job) or a short program; ask Columbia Basin College.

    Tri-Cities median $49,540 · 25th percentile $47,760 · stepping stone

  2. Dental hygienist

Prerequisites, then a two- to four-year hygiene program and national and regional exams.

Where: Columbia Basin College (dental hygiene).

    Tri-Cities median $122,480 · 25th percentile $108,520 · clears the three-child bar

  3. Dentist

A bachelor’s degree, then four years of dental school.

Where: the University of Washington School of Dentistry, including its RIDE program for rural dentistry, which starts in Spokane.

    Tri-Cities median $203,250 · 25th percentile $125,130 · clears the three-child bar

02 · BranchesWhere the work leads

General practice

Most dentists and hygienists work in general practice. Many dentists own their office, which makes it a small business.

Schedule: Weekday office hours.

Public health and rural clinics

Community clinics serve patients who cannot easily reach private offices.

Schedule: Weekday hours.

Specialties

Orthodontics, oral surgery and pediatric dentistry need two to six more years.

Schedule: Mostly office hours.

03 · For the familyThe schedule, for a father and for a mother

04 · The home-school yearsWhat to add to the core path

Grades 9–10

  • Everything in the shared core, with chemistry and biology with labs
  • Fine-motor practice: drawing, model-building, sewing

Grades 11–12

  • Hygiene prerequisites (chemistry, anatomy, microbiology) through Running Start
  • A dental-assistant job or shadowing

After high school

  • A hygiene program, or a bachelor’s toward dental school

Tie to the Verification Track

A hygienist checks the X-ray against the mouth, and the chart against the patient’s medicines. When AI marks a cavity, someone has to confirm it is really there. The Verification Track trains that habit.
